I woke up early this morning with a lot on my mind. Things hadn’t been going the way I expected them to and fear and worry filled my thoughts. I knew I needed to trust God, but I didn’t know how to do that when the bad seemed to outnumber the good. Circumstances were spinning wildly out of control and there didn’t appear to be any way we could help ourselves. And helplessness is a terrible thing to feel.

I opened up my Bible and began to search for wisdom, and to be honest, some comfort as well. I wanted to be reminded that God has this and that we are not alone. I wanted assurance that everything was going to be ok.  As I read God’s word, I kept coming back to Psalm 140:

“I know that the Lord secures justice for the poor and
upholds the cause of the needy.” (Psalm 140:12)

This is such an encouraging verse, however, I was stuck on the word “poor”. I don’t feel that I am poor in the literal sense… God has always provided for my needs. But, could that verse still be for me? Could I hold onto the promise that God will secure justice for me?

As it turns out, I can.

The “poor” in this context refers to those without resources to affect their deliverance. Simply put, that describes our situation perfectly. In our own strength there is nothing we can do to bring freedom from the circumstances we find ourselves in. Only God can help us.

We need to stand securely upon His promises.

God promises that even though storms will come – some that threaten to shake the foundations of our life, He will stay by our side and help us through. He hears our cries! He will secure justice for the poor and He will uphold the cause of the needy.

“This poor man called, and the LORD heard him;
he saved him out of all his troubles.” (Psalm 34:6)

When David faced Goliath, he was small and appeared to be no match for the mighty giant. However, when He placed His faith in the Lord, remembering that the battle was not his, but God’s, victory was found!

And so, just like David, though I am small and seemly no match for our giant, I will remember whose battle it really is. I will not stand on the problems and pains of this life, nor fight in my own strength. Instead, I will stand upon the promises of God! In Him, justice will be secured and victory will be won!

Standing Secure,

  7. Hey Joan,

I'm your neighbor this week over at #HeartEncouragement. I thought I commented last night to your post. But I don't see it here unless it's awaiting approval.

This is fresh insight on "poor" and I love your context of poor to mean without resources to affect our deliverance. And it reminds me of the beattitudes when Jesus said blessed are the poor in spirit. We really do need a Deliverer! Jesus! (If this is another comment from me, feel free to just use one.) :-)

    1. Hi Karen! I'm so glad you came back and made a new comment as your previous one didn't come through for some reason!

Yes - exactly! "Blessed are the poor in spirit." Those who are poor in spirit need Jesus... When we call out to Him, He will hear our prayers and help us. What a blessing that is!

      Thanks for stopping by!

  9. Your post reminded me of the folks in remote village who live what some would call poorly. And usually their living stays the same after they become believers and then they will tell you they are rich in the spirit. Poor is being without hope of even ones next meal, or maybe it could be said this way, no place to place ones hope is what poor is. Good post.
