I’ve just started reading a book by Priscilla Shirer called Fervent. The description of the book says that it is “a woman’s battle plan for serious, specific and strategic prayer.” I’ve only read the first few chapters, but one of the things that has already resonated with me is that fervent prayer requires focus. Our focus needs to be on God and His promises while remembering that we already have victory over our true enemy through Christ.

Though victory is won, the battle is still being fought. Each day we enter the battlefield and can’t afford to let down our guard. With the Armor meant to protect us and toss aside the plans of the enemy (see Eph. 6:14-17), we fight fueled with confidence knowing that the strength instilled in us by God renders the enemy powerless. This spiritual battle is fought and won as we fully depend on God through His word and prayer.

One tool that greatly contributes to the power of our prayers is to pray using the Scriptures. Hebrews 4:12 says that “God’s Word is alive and powerful, sharper than a two-edged sword.” When we speak and pray God’s Word, we are coming into agreement with Him, demonstrating our faith in His answers. Praying God’s Word is a simple, yet powerful method of prayer that will positively enrich your prayer life. You may simply add Scripture to your prayers, or personalize a verse by putting it in your own words as you pray. When praying using God’s word, our prayers are packed with an undefeatable one-two punch!

  1. Hello, Joan, dear friend! I fully agree with you, as I also have been beginning to read the book, Fervent. I was in a conversation recently with my husband about how the focus of our prayers shows God almightly power, as well!! There is so much power in His Word and that is what we need to overcome the enemy!! I'm looking forward to learning more of how to pray more fervently every day!!

    1. The book is great, isn't it? (I'm glad we're in the online study together, Ann!) When we come to God with courage, knowing that God is fighting through our prayers...and that the battle is already won, we can celebrate His victory and grow in our faith! I'm excited about that!

      Blessings, Joan

  2. Thanks, Joan, for this review. I read and reviewed the book myself, and am pondering the notion of using it with the ladies in my church as a "book club" over the summer. This would be a brand new thing for us, but I think they're open to it!

  4. Our Bible Study group is doing her study on the Armor of God. It is excellent and has a similar message. Getting prepared for warfare through prayer. We also watched War Room the other night. Wow! Getting even more intentional in my prayer life. Blessed Monday morning my friend!

    1. Good morning, Deb! I haven't see the War Room (yet) but have heard such great things about it! I may go order it today! Being intentional in our prayer life is so important, and, by putting on the Armor of God, we are fighting with some powerful tools!

  5. I think Jesus Himself set a perfect example when He fought the devil with the Word of God. There is nothing more powerful.

This week God is showing me beauty in the way that He helps us deal with the "small" sins that threaten our relationship with Him.

    GOD BLESS!
