Several years ago I had the blessing of being our church’s first receptionist. Prior to me taking the position, we didn’t have a particular person answering the phones and greeting the people who came through the front door. However, as our church grew, the need to delegate some responsibilities (I’ll call them blessings) also grew.

I soon discovered that this position provided an opportunity to meet many new people, both to me and to the church. It also gave me an opportunity to serve in a way that seemed to suit my personality. I am cheerful by nature, and I’ve been told that my voice is a pleasant one on the phone. So, as I dove into this new area of service, I was filled with joy by being able to use a gift that seemed to come so easily to me.

One of the ladies who often called into the office used to refer to me as the “First Impression Specialist”. On Sunday mornings, she’d even introduce me that way to the people we met! I loved the description and new “title”, but with it also came more responsibilities…whoops, I mean blessings. I became acutely aware that as people called in or came into the office, they were looking for Jesus. They were hoping to find the fellowship, joy and healing that He offers. And so, as I realized this, I made a point of trying to shine His light through my words, actions and even my demeanor. I didn’t want their first impression of this house of worship to be negative. Now...I am not perfect – far from it! I know that there have been times when I have not been a good witness. However, at other times, I have been blessed to be able to reach out and share His love.

“In the same way, let your light shine before men, that they may see your good deeds
and praise your Father in heaven" (Matthew 5:16).

That verse in Matthew reminds me of the children’s song, “This Little Light of Mine” --This little light of mine, I'm gonna let it shine…Let it shine, Let it shine, Let it shine. It goes on to remind us not to hide the light (Christ’s Light) nor allow the enemy to snuff it out. But instead, to let it shine for all to see until Christ’s return! What great advice!

As I go through my day, I am reminded to let my light shine. You never know who may be watching. When trials come and we look to Jesus for strength, people will see. When we remember to reach out in love to those around us, people will see. When we stumble and fail…and then grasp God’s hand to help us up again, people will see. If we want to point people to Jesus, we need to become "First Impression Specialists" because our most powerful witness is in our actions. So, let us remember to show His love and His Light to the world. That way, He will shine for all to see.

Shining for Him,

  1. I love your "First Impression Specialists". I'm sure you were awesome at this job. Your personality comes through even online. I agree with you too. First impressions can be lasting, whether good or bad. It's so important that we remember who we belong to and live in Him. That way we allow His light to shine in us and through us.

    I loved this post Joan!

    Blessings and love,
    Debbie

  2. Thanks for your note about Google Chrome, I will definitely have to try that as I always have trouble posting on embedded blogs comments on blogger! I think it is great that you are thinking about being a good first impression, because I'm sure it can make the difference as to whether someone goes back to your church or not on occasion. Thanks for the reminder to let our light shine as we go through the day!

  3. Continue to let your light shine Joan! :) Ephesians 5:8 says “For once you were full of darkness, but now you have light from the Lord. So live as people of light!” We should be a light to others in our attitudes, words, encouragement, and compassion as a testimony of our authentic faith and trust. You are a bright reflection of how the glory and the spirit of God works through you. :)

    Blessings and hugs,
    Denise

  4. Hi Joan - I can tell from your picture that your title is very apt. Its so true that we should let our lights shine because our actions are what people judge God by sadly. Great encouragement Joan. glad to be catching up with you again.
    God bless

  5. Joan - I have served in our greeter's ministry for several years and in fact was the coordinator for a while. I remember the first Sunday my husband and I visited our present church and how impressed we were by the friendliness and kindness shown to us as we entered the door. I'm thankful for these "first impression specialists" and am reminded that I too should be careful to leave that first impression as a good one...whether in church our in every day life.

    Blessings,
    Joan

  7. This Little Light of Mine also came to my mind as I was reading this. It is important for that first impression to be a positive one. This is something we all need to keep in mind when we're representing Christ, and really, isn't that all the time?
Blessings for a wonderful new year.

  8. My husband loves standing by the doors of our church building to greet everyone as he comes in. He has a gift for making everyone feel welcome. I'm glad the Lord has equipped his body with all the right gifts. We all can let His light shine in some way!

  11. First impressions can certainly be important. Many years ago I selected a Doctor because of his cheerful receptionist who took my phone call. Greeters at a church do or should show forth Jesus. I know you do that. My uncle was a cheerful greeter at his church and he often gave a holy hug to the senior citizens. Widows do not get hugs often and they need that holy touch.

  12. Joan, I really liked this one! Yes, people are looking. We are surrounded by a cloud of witnesses - believers and non-believers alike. Are we reflecting Jesus?

I pray that I continue to be a good ambassador for Jesus - and that peoples' first impression is this: "Wow. She looks just like her Savior!"

    Happy New Year, dear friend.

Looking forward to spending 2012 with you!

    GOD BLESS!

  15. Such a beautiful post...and so filled with truth! I recently read a quote that sums up your blog post beautifully..."Our lives are the only Bible some people will ever read."

YES! We must always try to remember to be the light of Christ in our everyday comings and goings.

    Happy New Year to you!

  16. @Valerie /That's a good point, Valerie! I've also heard it said that "we are the only Jesus some people will ever meet". Being a good witness for Him is an important responsibility, but also a true blessing.
